PMT for Behavior Problems

What is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?

You can read about PCIT (which is for ages 2-6) here: PCIT

What is Parent Management Training (PMT)?

Parent management training (PMT) is the most well-established treatment for behavioral concerns for kids ages 7-12. PMT focuses on you, the parents, because you’re with your child every day and small, consistent changes you make will make a big difference. You’ll learn clear, practical tools that actually fit into real life (no sticker charts that last two days and disappear). These skills help reduce daily battles, increase cooperation, and rebuild a calmer, more connected relationship with your child.

Sessions are typically parent-only, which gives you space to talk honestly, ask questions, and problem-solve. Your therapist will teach and model strategies, help you fine-tune what’s working, and support you as you practice. Occasionally, your child may join a session if it’s helpful, but the heart of the work happens with parents.

Between sessions, you’ll try the skills at home in manageable ways. We’ll troubleshoot together, adjust as needed, and celebrate progress. Well before this fast-acting 12-week (on average) treatment is over, you can expect things at home to feel much more peaceful, predictable, and connected.
