Gender Affirming Therapy

What ages does the Center for CBT provide Gender Affirming Therapy and Evaluations?

Therapy for Kids, Teens, and Adults; Gender Affirming Procedure Evaluation for Teens and Adults.

What is the Gender Affirming Therapy?

Every individual’s experience of gender and gender expression is unique, and many benefit from psychotherapy to clarify their goals for affirming their gender, to problem solve any barriers to receiving gender affirming medical care, and to obtain emotional support throughout the process. For transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals who are also experiencing depression, anxiety, or trauma, gender affirming therapy provides a safe and affirming space to engage in evidence-based treatments for mental health concerns while processing their experience of transphobia and cultural/societal oppression.

What is the purpose of a Gender Affirming Procedure Evaluation?

  • Many insurance companies and medical providers require an evaluation with a specialized mental health professional prior to undergoing gender affirming surgical procedures.

  • Examples of procedures include the following:

    • Bilateral mastectomy with chest reconstruction

    • Breast augmentation

    • Facial surgery

    • Body contouring

    • Orchiectomy, or removal of the testes

    • Hysterectomy, which removes the uterus and ovaries

    • Vocal surgery

What does a Gender Affirming Surgical Evaluation entail?

  • At the Center for CBT, we strive to make the process collaborative and supportive, to reduce barriers to accessing gender affirming care

  • We follow evaluation guidelines outlined by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH)

  • Topics discussed during the evaluation include your medical and psychological history, your experience of gender, and your understanding of the risks and benefits of the procedure you are seeking.
